Dead Battery? Calgary Jump Start Service
A jump start for a vehicle that will not turn over, available 24 hours a day — and if a boost is not the answer, towing is.
What a boost does, and what it tells you
A battery boost connects your vehicle to an external power source so the starter gets the current it needs. If the only problem was a battery too flat to crank the engine, it starts and you carry on.
Why batteries go flat here
Cold is the obvious one. A battery's ability to deliver current drops sharply as temperatures fall, while a cold engine takes more effort to turn over — so a battery merely tired in October can be useless in January.
The rest are ordinary: an interior light left on overnight, a door not quite latched, or a vehicle unused for a few weeks. Short trips contribute too, since a five-minute drive does not put back what starting took out.
What the result tells you
How the vehicle responds is informative. One that fires immediately and keeps running had a discharged battery, probably nothing worse. One that cranks slowly before catching suggests a battery near the end of its life. One that clicks but never turns over points towards the starter or the connections. One that starts then dies usually means the charging system is not keeping up.
That is not a diagnosis, and we do not carry out repairs — but it tells you whether driving away is realistic.
When a boost is worth calling for
- The engine cranks slowly, clicks rapidly, or does nothing at all when you turn the key.
- Dashboard lights are dim, flickering, or dead.
- The vehicle sat unused for days or weeks and now will not start.
- Something electrical was left on overnight.
- It is the first hard cold snap and the vehicle was already slow to start.
Before we arrive
- Park as far from moving traffic as you can, and put your hazard lights on.
- Switch off the headlights, heater, radio, and heated seats.
- Pop the hood if you can.
- Find out whether the battery is under the hood, in the trunk, or under a seat — plenty are not where you would expect.
- Have the key or fob with you.
- Think about where the vehicle would go if it does not start.
How the call works
Describe the symptom
Call 403-690-2727. What the engine does when you turn the key is the most useful thing you can tell us: silence, a click, slow cranking, or a start that does not last.
We come to you
The operator connects to the appropriate points on your vehicle.
The attempt
If it starts, you are going. If it does not, or it starts and dies, we talk through what that means.
The next step, if needed
If the vehicle cannot run reliably, towing to a shop can be arranged on the same call.
What a boost cannot fix
A boost addresses a shortage of charge, not a component that has failed, and we cannot guarantee any given vehicle will start.
- A battery with a failed internal cell will not hold the charge.
- A dead starter motor will not turn the engine regardless of available current.
- A failed alternator means the vehicle drains itself again once disconnected.
- Fuel, ignition, and immobiliser faults are unrelated to battery charge.
- Severely corroded or broken terminals and ground straps can stop a boost working at all.
- We do not supply or install replacement batteries, and we do not carry out repairs.
When the next step is a tow
If your vehicle will not start after a boost, starts and then dies, or starts but is clearly not safe to drive, leaving it where it is rarely helps. Towing to a repair shop is usually the sensible next move, and it can be arranged from the same call. You choose the destination. If the situation is urgent — the vehicle is blocking traffic, or you are somewhere you should not be waiting — emergency towing covers what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a boost definitely start my car?
No, and anyone who promises otherwise is guessing. A boost supplies the current a weak or discharged battery cannot. If the real fault is a failed battery cell, a dead starter, a bad alternator, or a broken connection, the engine still will not run — or it will start and then die shortly after.
Do you sell or install a new battery?
Battery replacement is not part of our roadside service. If the battery turns out to be finished, the practical options are getting the vehicle to a shop or parts retailer, which we can tow it to, or arranging a replacement yourself once it is somewhere convenient.
It started after the boost. Can I drive home?
Usually, but drive somewhere useful rather than straight into a parking spot. If the battery was deeply discharged, a short trip may not put back enough charge to start it again, and if the alternator is the real problem the vehicle will stop once the battery drains. Driving to a shop while it is running is often smarter.
My car has push-button start and the key fob is dead too. Is that the same problem?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery and a dead vehicle battery produce similar symptoms — nothing happens when you press the button — but they are separate faults with separate fixes. Most vehicles have a backup method for a dead fob, and your owner's manual will cover it. Mention the symptom when you call.
